Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
In 1991, Diana Gabaldon published her first novel called Outlander. Outlander won the Romance Writers of America's RITA Award for Best Romance of 1991. It features a very independent woman protagonist, Claire Beauchamp Randall. Claire Randall (British Army Nurse) with her husband, Frank Randall (M16 Army Officer/History Professor) are celebrating their second honeymoon in Inverness Scotland after World War II. She through a very mysterious occurrence travels back in time during the 18th Century Scottish Jacobite Rebellion. Claire becomes involved with Jamie Fraser and the Clan MacKenzie. She also meets an ancestor of her husband, Black Jack Randal.
I always say, when reading the first book don't allow the first few chapters to bog you down. They are very detailed about the history of Britain and Scotland. This epic novel has strong characters, history, suspense, fantasy, and science fiction. It is much more than the typical chick romance book. There are 8 books in the Outlander Series. I have read the first four books in the series. I highly recommend this Series. Outlander became very popular, and for many years, its readers wanted it to be translated into film.
The readers got their wish; there is a Starz Network Series based on the Outlander Novel. The Outlander television series is excellent. Ronald D. Moore the producer, is the same producer of the various Star Trek Series and Battlestar Galactica. Outlander is filmed in Scotland and the costume designer is Terry Dresbach. Bear McCreary is the series music composer, and beautiful title song is based upon the Scottish folk song The Skye Boat Song.
The three main actors are: Caitriona Blafe as Claire Randall, Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser, and Tobias Menzies as Frank Randall/Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. Expect to see these fine actors receiving nominations & perhaps awards for their performances.
The 1st Season is almost finished; there will be a DVD available during the Summer. The Outlander Series has been renewed for a second season, and will be based on the novel, Dragonfly in Amber.
